As a new college grad, it might feel like it’s something totally out of the blue to have a recruiter reach out to you and want to meet with you. After all, aren’t recruiters for people who have 5, 10, 20+ years of experience and have the specific background that their client is looking for?

Yeah, sometimes. But at Katapult Network, we understand how hard it can be to find that first professional level opportunity after graduating from college.

But, why SHOULD you consider working with a recruiter?

1. A recruiter will be more upfront with you

A good recruiter that works with recent college graduates will tell you that the financial analyst role you’ve applied for over and over again is likely not going to happen because those companies have a firm requirement of hiring someone with 2+ years of experience.

But, they can point you in the right direction so you can get the two years of experience needed to open doors and even jobs you hadn’t considered.

2. Expert resume coaching

Let’s say you’re part of the overwhelming majority of recent college grads that don’t even know where their career center on their college campus was. Which means you likely haven’t had a “resume expert” give you actual feedback on what you could improve on your resume.

Not all online resume templates are created equal, and if you’re just having your parents and friends look at your resume, they’re checking for typos, not advising you on how to showcase your experience in a way that will appeal to employers. At the very least, if you ask a recruiter about what you could change on your resume to get it to attract employers, they should be able to give you a few actionable insights that are rooted in actual feedback from their clients hiring entry-level talent.

3. Helping you answer, “What do I want to be when I grow up?”

If you’re one of the recent college grads that got through four years of college, completed your major, and realized you don’t want to work in the field you had your heart set on when you declared your major, answering the “What do you want to do” question might be tougher than most for you.

Having a conversation with a recruiter can bring you some clarity about how you can apply your talents and skills gained during your college education/ experience in the “real world.”

4. Help you understand the jobs which are actually available

With a quick scan of the online job boards, it seems like as a recent college grad you can go paint houses, be an administrative assistant, go back to school, or go into sales. It doesn’t feel like anything that you might have gone to school for is an option. However, the job titles that seem too sophisticated for your career level may be more accessible than you think.
